Make them share the sonic bed: If your kick drum has its main punch down low around 60 Hz, use your EQ to give the bass guitar a slight nudge at 100 Hz and pull the bass back a bit at 60 Hz. This physically locks them together as one massive unit without overwhelming the vocal lane.
Snare Drum
- Preamp Gain: Peaks up to +2 VU / -12 dBFS.

- The Practical Solution: The snare needs to match the energetic drive of the vocal. If the snap of the snare starts piercing the ears or burying the lyrics, make a narrow EQ cut on the snare track between 2 kHz and 4 kHz (the exact presence range of the human voice) to carve out a clean window for the vocals.
3. The Midrange Pocket (Guitars and Keyboards)
Guitars, keyboards, and vocals all fight for the exact same midrange real estate. Leaving them all in the center causes massive “sonic masking,” forcing you to turn the vocals up to dangerous volumes just to hear them.
Rhythm Guitar & Keyboards
- Preamp Gain: Target 0 VU / -18 dBFS.
- Panning: Rhythm Guitar panned wide left (9 o’clock); Keyboards panned wide right (3 o’clock or stereo spread).
